Excessive alcohol consumption is a health problem at all the corners of world. Alcohol can cause griveous injury to the liver. It happens so because achol is metabolised in the liver. Alcocol consumption for a long period can cause a variety of liver diseases and sustained injuries. Some of them are hepatitis, obstructive jaundice and cirrhosis. Initially it encourages fat deposition in liver cells. When this injury progresses a more severe inflammation and liver injury can happen. This stage is called hepatitis. Slowly this leads to deposition of proteins in cells and fibrosis of cells. It may progress to cirrhosis, characterized by excessive liver scarring, vascular alterations, and eventual liver failure.
Chronic drinkers have a high chance of developing liver cirrhosis. Since there is no effective treatmentof liver cirrhosis it is better to refrain from drinking. End stage disease may require liver transplantation.
