What is the cause of Vomiting During Pregnancy?


1. Most likely reason for vomitting during pregnancy ?


Some  reasons are forwarded to explain vomiting during pregnancy :

Rapid changes in hormone levels – cause changes in the muscle contraction and relaxation patterns of your stomach and intestines that results in nausea and vomiting.

2. Which hormones are responsible for vomiting during pregnancy.


  • Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone

3. What other factors can aggravate the vomitting process?


  • Abnormal levels of thyroid hormones  – So check your Thyroid Hormones .
  • Low blood sugar level – Stay hydrated and keep normal diet
  • Serotonin may have a role – Serotonin is a brain chemical that affects both the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

4. What is the role of family history in vomiting during pregnancy?


If you have a family history of hyperemesis gravidarum, you are more likely to have severe vomiting during pregnancy (hyperemesis gravidarum).

5. What is the cause for hyperemesis gravidarum?

Exact cause not known. Most likely cause are the following  –

  1. Hormonal: Elevated levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or a component of this hormone may play a role in inducing vomiting.
  2. Gastrointestinal: Helicobacter pylori  bacteria that live in the intestinal tract may cause the development of peptic ulcer disease. These bacteria are found in a greater percentage pregnant women and greater still in women with hyperemesis gravidarum.
  3. Psychosocial: some researchers think the condition may be a woman’s psychological reaction against the pregnancy.
